Orientation Day in Hong Kong

In the blazing Hong Kong summer heat, a special group of people gathered in a small room at the beautiful LPC campus. That’s right! Orientation day was finally here! 15 fresh faces to the UWC community stood before all the parents, second years and fresh graduates. After speeches, certificates and socialising, nervous frowns turned into big smiles by the end of the afternoon. Everyone had a blast!

The afternoon started off with a presentation by the Hong Kong National Committee about the UWC community that we are entering. They explained that this is something that is bigger than just Hong Kong and LPC. There is a special connection between UWC students, past and present that unite us around the globe.

After this inspiring presentation, the second years of various UWC colleges stole the stage with their funny stories about life at UWC. I fondly remember a UWCCSC student telling us to bring plenty of shrimp fries and chips (iconic HK snacks) because that reminded him of home, and got him through his hardest times. I’ll make sure to bring lots of local snacks to RCN this August!! I can’t wait to share them with everyone :)

Finally, all the zero years were presented a certificate, and there was a short networking session for us to ask our second years questions. I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, as I got to listen to interesting stories from different UWCs. I think the best piece of advice I got was to not have any expectations and go with the flow. They also emphasized that an open mind is key to surviving the 2 years at UWCs, as the cultures and people are very very diverse.

Overall, I really look forward to arriving at RCN this August. I can’t wait to meet everyone and embark on the most exciting 2 years of my life!
